AFRICA-PHASE I

The Lord had said to go to Sierra Leone and start a radio station, so I would be ministering in churches, usually up country in the provinces, and then be returning to Freetown, the capitol city, to deal with the government officials. Over the period of several years, I would have several hundred meetings with government officials before we would gain all the necessary approvals.

When we arrived in the country, we registered with the

U. S. Embassy/Consulate, and they told me we should contact the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and talk to the Minister (secretary) of Information and Broadcasting. I started to learn of the politics that goes in on all of the countries of the world. I do jokingly tell people I went as a preacher and returned as a politician.

Dr. Bzo, Shannon and I went and met the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. He explained what we officially needed to do. This was December 1989. In April 1993, we would finally have every approval needed, without paying a bribe to anyone to obtain the permits.

I prepared a 13-page document outlining in detail our plans for a radio station that would include international shortwave transmitters as well as a local transmitter. I would present our plans to the President’s office, the First Vice President’s office, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, as well as the Minister of Health, Rural Development, and Social Services, Education, Industry and Trade, Power, Mines, and Transportation and Communication. I would personally meet with most of the top leaders of the nation.

President Momoh was the President at the time. His office sent a letter of recommendation to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasts recommending quick approval of our proposed projects. I didn’t understand much of African politics, so when the Permanent Secretary asked me who I knew in the president’s office, I said no one, it is just the Lord doing it. I would later learn that I should have just said “a friend” and be referring to the Lord.

When we went to the First Vice President’s office, we were not really being received until Dr. Bzo tried to explain who his father was (without us understanding what he was talking about). As soon as he realized that Mr. Bzo was Dr. Bzo’s father, immediately he wanted to help. The secret society connections are about the strongest connections you can have in the worldly realm in Africa. In the end, these connections did not help any, but it was interesting to see how it would normally work.

As I continued playing politics and visiting all the cabinet members who must approve the permits, I was sent a message. One cabinet minister sent word for me to meet with him because he wanted to tell me how much it would cost (bribe) to get our approval. I told the man who brought the message, “I am not going to meet with him because I am not going to pay a bribe”. God had told me to do this, so God was going to have to do it without a bribe.
